Web Hosting

To upload files to a hosting server, there is a quick, but a little more “technical” way of using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or an “easier but time-consuming” way of “using a File Manager or similar utility provided by the web hosting company” according to http://www.webdevelopersnotes.com/hosting/upload_website_files_to_web_host.php3.  The FTP is similar to the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP), and the best way to upload files is via FTP programs/clients.  They can be free depending on functions, features, user interface and preference.  According to http://www.ehow.com/how_6754163_upload-files.html, once the FTP program is launched, complete the first time process of entering in the web server account information.  Typically, multiple hosting accounts are supported.  Then, connect to the server, which will provide a split screen of file structure of your local computer against the web server’s.  Using the upload button, double clicking, or drag and drop, the files are transferred from your local computer to the web server.   File transfer progress should be shown and you will see which files have been uploaded, which are features typically not provided by using the web hosting server’s File Manager.

To access the file Manager, check under the Control panel of the signed in account.  Upload website files to the “document root directory” and change permission and naming by clicking on the directory name which displays the set of links.  By clicking on the folder in front of the directory name, the contents inside the directory would be shown.  If you want to transfer files to a specific directory, first navigate to that location and then use the upload button.

  1. I think you did a good job of thoroughly researching what web hosting is and how to do it. I've found that for me the easiest program to use to upload files to a web server is File Zilla. With that I can just drag and drop to upload a file or to download a file to my computer from my website's server.
